Chrome For iOS Updated With iOS 6 And iPhone 5 Support

Chrome For iOS Updated With iOS 6 And iPhone 5 Support

The iOS App Store is an extremely active place at the moment as the Apple review team struggle to fight their way through the barrage of apps that are being sent to them by developers with iPhone 5 and iOS 6 compatibility upgrades. We’ve already seen a number of notable and popular apps getting the support for the larger display of the new iPhone with Google now joining the party with a welcome update to their extremely popular Chrome for iOS web browser.
Chrome immediately shot to the top of the iOS download charts when it was released on day two of the annual I/O conference in San Francisco, managing to hover around the top spot ever since as users continue to download it as a replacement for Apple’s Mobile Safari browser.

BiteSMS 7.0 Beta For iOS 6 Now Available To Download

BiteSMS 7.0 Beta For iOS 6 Now Available To Download

When it comes to jailbreaking an iOS device, everybody has their own personal reasons for doing so, and although I do find tweaks such as SBSettings and Springtomize to be incredibly useful, the primary reason I regularly jailbreak my iPhone is for a text-messaging enhancer by the name ofBiteSMS.
Like any good app, the developers are keen to continue updating and improving the service to thousands of users, and since many would have updated to iOS 6 over the last week (perhaps regrettably so), the BiteSMS team has released version 7.0 as a beta. If you’re currently runningBiteSMS 6.3 – the first iteration to support theming of the app – on iOS 5, then you’re not missing out on anything, since the beta is simply an attempted port of the current version, but for those running a tethered jailbreak on iOS 6, you can give BiteSMS a go right now.

iPhone 5 Jailbroken Already!

iPhone 5 Jailbroken Already!

Yes you read that right! iPhone 5 has been jailbroken successfully on the launch day! Popular and respected iPhone developer chpwn tweeted a picture of his iPhone 5’s homescreen with Cydia icon on it in full 1136 x 640 resolution glory (the same res. as iPhone 5).

He confirmed that it is jailbroken in a reply on Twitter to another iPhone developer and security researcher i0n1c:

It appears that the iPhone 5 has a slight issue with its display, as one of our readers reports that his freshly unboxed new toy has a noticeable yellow tint to it. Could this be another “-gate” issue much like Antennagate on iPhone 4? Or is it an issue that will fix itself with the passage of time? Check out all the details after the jump.
We received photos from a reader who has asked us to refer to him in this post by his nickname iJINKX. The photos in question – which we’ve placed below – show the display having a yellow tint near the top edge:

Camera Test: iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4 [VIDEO]

Camera Test: iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4 [VIDEO]

hero_back
Apple made a song and dance of the new iPhone 5′s camera improvements, and although the resolution remained at 8-megapixels (translating to "unchanged" among the overwhelming majority), Apple not only improved its build quality by incorporating a Sapphire lens, but also claim it performs much better in low lighting conditions.
Of course, Apple said its new Maps app was the real deal, but we all know how that has transpired, so of course, the only way to properly gauge its performance is to test it in the real world. What better cameras to compare with than those of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the two predecessors to the iPhone 5 having released in 2010 and 2011 respectively?

In the following video, Redmond Pie’s Steven Chi recorded various settings using the three Apple smartphones, and although there is little separating the three solid snappers, the iPhone 5′s is noticeably sharper and more vibrant than the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
When all is said and done, the camera is certainly one of the lower-key improvements in a device boasting a brand new processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4G LTE. That said, with the likes of Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, popular among mobile users for uploading photos on a daily basis, it was important that Apple delivered some enhancements to the main, rear-facing camera – if only small – and that definitely looks to have been the case.
It does look as though Apple – along with most other mobile vendors – are close to hitting a plateau in terms of what can be offered to consumers. Sure, the processor, GPU, and camera can always be bumped up a notch or two – as has been the case here – but when a smartphone performs seamlessly, delivers sharp graphics and offers very high quality image and video recording, it’s hard for Apple et al to deliver that "wow" factor every time.
The device – in the eyes of many – certainly does have that, but I think you’ll agree the improvements to the camera are negligible at best. Amateur photographers will continue to take snaps of their lunch, the aficionados will still use their Canon or Nikon DSLRs, and everybody will remain happy.
What do you make of the new snapper? Leave your thoughts via the usual mediums below!

Speed Test: iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 [VIDEO]

Speed Test: iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 [VIDEO]

Yesterday, it was confirmed through multiple benchmarks that, with its custom ARMv7 dual-core chip dynamically clocked between 750MHz to 1.2GHz, Apple’s iPhone 5 is indeed the fastest smartphone available in the market today. It bests every other high-end Android smartphone (Galaxy S III, One X, Galaxy Nexus, you name it!); doesn’t matter if they come with four cores or are clocked at higher frequencies.
Now, we’ve come across a video that puts the iPhone 5 against the Galaxy S III using quite a few of the same benchmarks. Check it out after the jump.
GS3iPhone5
Performance over LTE under SpeedTest.net, under SunSpider Javascript 0.9.1, GLBenchmark 2.5, all are compared and shown the video. The results are still the same, of course: the iPhone 5 smokes the Galaxy S III.
The most significant performance differences can be appreciated under GLBenchmark Egypt HD test in which iPhone 5 renders on-screen and off-screen graphics nearly twice as fast as the Galaxy S III. Browser performance also sees similar results, with the iPhone 5 scoring half as low as the Galaxy S III (lower is better in SunSpider).
All of this comes as a result of the tight integration between hardware and software; Apple develops iOS and designs the iPhone around it (and vice versa). Both are, quite literally, made for each other. Android phones, on the other hand, have their hardware and software created by different companies so they compensate for the lack of optimization by throwing in more cores and higher clock speeds.
This tight integration also has other benefits as well such as significantly improved power management. The iPhone 5 – despite having a 1440mAh battery – can last on 4G LTE for almost as long as a DROID RAZR MAXX with its 3300mAh battery.
But keep this in mind, though: these are just benchmarks. Real-life performance of the Galaxy S III vs. the iPhone 5 – taking photographs, browsing the web, sending and receiving texts and calls – isn’t noticeably different. Benchmarks like these are meant only to test just how technically faster – in terms of calculations per second, and frame-rate for graphically intense games – one phone is over the other.

TinyUmbrella New Version Released Supports New iOS 6

After quite a delay... 6.0b and GM support
Sorry for the delay folks... with funerals and travel and changing jobs I've had quite the summer. I've updated TU for apple tv 5.0.2 (sorry for the wait!) as well as all of the iOS 6 betas. I've had to change the way the OSX app is packaged. No more installer for now as Gatekeeper sucks more than taxes.

How To Jailbreak iOS 6 – iPhone And iPod touch (A4-Based Only) By Redsn0w [Tutorial]

How To Jailbreak iOS 6 – iPhone And iPod touch (A4-Based Only) By Redsn0w [Tutorial]

As is usually the case when this time comes around, jailbreakers have been waiting patiently for the official word on whether it is safe to update their devices to iOS 6 or not. Although Apple have taken some design and functionality inspiration from a number of Cydia based tweaks and offerings, the hardcore jailbreak faithful still need to experience that freedom on their hardware.
iPhone Dev-Team’s Redsn0w tethered jailbreak works on today’s final iOS 6 release. Follow the simple steps below to jailbreak iOS 6 using the latest version of the iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w tool.
Before going through any jailbreak process it is always good housekeeping to perform a full backup of all information on the device. It is unlikely that anything will go wrong during the process but when undertaking any process that modifies the internals of a file system it is always prudent to err on the side of caution.
Compatible devices:
  • A4 based iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th-gen only.
Notes:
  • This a tethered jailbreak, and is limited to the above mentioned devices only. There is currently no untethered jailbreak available for iOS 6 yet.
  • iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPod touch 5th-gen are not supported by this jailbreak.
  • If you rely on unlock, do not update to iOS 6 yet.

Why You Shouldn’t Get An iPhone 5 By Nokia

Why You Shouldn’t Get An iPhone 5 By Nokia

As you are almost certainly aware by now, the brand-new iPhone 5 is releasing tomorrow, and with consumers already queuing in their droves to be among the first to get their hands on the device, rivaling companies are queuing up to take a pop at Apple’s flagship.
The lengths companies have gone to makes it look like a touch of the Green-Eyed Monster, particularly with Apple’s shares in excess of $700 a pop, and with Samsung already having had its pound of flesh with an ad bashing the queuing Apple fanatics, Nokia has felt compelled to offer its own reasons why you shouldn’t buy an iPhone 5.

First Teardown Images Of iPhone 5 Emerge

First Teardown Images Of iPhone 5 Emerge

Now that Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 5, it is no longer a collection of rumors and speculative suggestions. The sixth-generation iPhone is a fully functioning device which consumers all over the world will be able to get their hands on starting tomorrow, or possibly today, if any delivery companies happened to shoot themselves in the foot by delivering some pre-orders early. With more than two million pre-order units sold over the first weekend, there will be some happy faces tomorrow when the delivery man comes knocking on our doors.
It’s unlikely that those who took the plunge and parted with their cash for a pre-order have done so to pull the iPhone 5 apart when it is actually delivered. I’m as interested in the engineering and how the device is actually assembled as much as the next technology boffin, but I certainly didn’t order a black and a white unit just to pull the cover off and inspect the internals when it eventually gets here. Thankfully for us, there are a number of companies out there who thrive on seeing what is going on inside of these devices, and although we usually see an immediate teardown from the guys at iFixit, it’s the turn of iPhone-Garage to show us inside this latest Apple hardware.

A6 Processor In iPhone 5 Features Apple Designed Custom Cores

A6 Processor In iPhone 5 Features Apple Designed Custom Cores

iPhone 5 splashWhen Apple announced the iPhone 5 at their recent media event, they lifted the lid on what was possibly the worst kept secret in the smartphone world. The numerous leaks that had emerged in the months leading up to the announcement had pretty much enlightened us on what to expect, and when Apple officially introduced the device, there weren’t any great surprises. With that said, one aspect of the device that hadn’t had much pre-announcement coverage was the processor within the device, which turned out to be the new Apple A6 CPU.
Anyone who regularly watches or keeps abreast of Apple hardware announcements will already be aware that they always choose not to go into any great technical specifics about the processors that they embed within devices. From a user’s perspective, the only thing they really need to know about is how the new processor actually affects their day-to-day usage of the device, something that Apple covered when they discussed performance improvements like launching apps, saving images and viewing attachments from within emails.

Google Maps For iOS 6 Comming to App Store

Google Maps For iOS 6 Comming to App Store

Update x1: The Guardian is reporting that Google has already submitted the official Google Maps app for iOS 6 and is now waiting for Apple’s approval. @stroughtonsmith has also confirmed this on Twitter.
Update x2: In a statement sent to AllThingsD, Apple has responded to the criticism by the users on the new Maps app in iOS 6:
We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.
Although iOS 6 didn’t exactly pack in a mind-blowing level of new features, quite a few significant alterations were made to what existed with the previous version. For example, the rather awful YouTube app was removed as a stock feature, but iOS users could grab a much-improved iteration over at the App Store, so everything in the garden was rosy.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the old native Maps app, which was made by Google right from the get-go with the original iPhone back in 2007. Apple drafted its own offering with iOS 6, and although much has been made of its 3D-mapping capabilities and turn-by-turn navigation, not everybody has been thrilled to see the Google offering displaced.

Facebook v5.0.1 For iOS Released, Features Full Support For iOS 6 And iPhone 5

Just in time for the launch of Apple’s latest firmware – iOS 6 – and the iPhone 5, Facebook has taken the opportunity to update their iOS app with full support for iOS 6 and the taller display of the iPhone 5.
The App Store has seen plenty of action over the last few days as Apple has been frantically reviewing and approving apps that bring iPhone 5 compatibility in time for the launch of the new device tomorrow. As you would expect, a number of high profile apps have been updated and rushed through the review process with the official Facebook app being one of the latest. Version 5.0.1 of the app has just hit the App Store and doesn’t seem to bring any notable changes other than specifying iPhone 5 and iOS 6 support.

Here’s A List Of iOS 6 Passbook Compatible Apps For iPhone

iOS 6 has only just made it way onto iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices worldwide, and despite Apple bragging of some 200 new changes, it’s fair to day many are struggling to find many of real significance moving forward. Although the Maps app may have come as a disappointment, there’s quite a bit of anticipation encircling Passbook – Apple’s very own answer to NFC – and although there aren’t too many establishments supporting the Cupertino’s flagship iOS 6 feature, more and more apps are being added to the App Store at an hourly rate.
Passbook will handily store your gift cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, vouchers, and tickets for events, and if you’ve just upgraded your firmware and are desperate to try it out but stuck on which apps to test with, you’ve come to the right place.

There wasn’t, perhaps, quite the palava last year when iOS 5 notched up an incredible number of betas before finally being released, but it’s fair to say – as with any OS release – Apple has again found itself having to work tirelessly in order to ready iOS 6 for its scheduled drop date.
It gives me great pleasure to reveal, that if you’re one of the many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users waiting for iOS 6, that Apple has just pushed the final version of its latest and greatest mobile operating system, and you can grab it right now from the direct links provided at the foot of this post.
