iOS 6 Features: Facebook

Apple this fall is launching iOS 6, the next major version of the world’s best mobile operating system. Among the hundreds of new features it will deliver, Facebook integration will play a major role in how the OS will help bolster sales of iPhone and iPad generations to come.   Review image

Thanks to direct implementation of Facebook ties, iOS 6 makes it easier than ever to interact with the world’s largest social network. Heck, THE social network.Users will no longer have to leave their current application to share a photo from Camera, for example, or to post their location (right from the new Maps with 3D views). If you get a high score at your favorite game, you can brag right from inside Game Center.

Best of all, you can do all this (and much more) by not even touching that virtual keyboard. Just tell Siri what you want your friends to see on Facebook and she’ll take care of it.

“Your Facebook friends’ information is kept up to date across all your iOS devices, automatically updating details in Contacts when they change, and scheduling events and birthdays in your Calendar,” says Apple.

When it’s this easy to go social, it really becomes the uber-fun activity Mark Zuckerberg originally intended it to be.

“You need to sign in to Facebook only once, and you’ll be off and sharing,” Apple explains. “Never miss another birthday or get-together, since Facebook events are integrated into Calendar.”

“And your Facebook friends’ profile information is integrated into Contacts, so when they update an email address or phone number you automatically stay up to date. Now that’s something to post about,” says the Mac maker.

Apple is also making it super easy to “Like” content directly from the App Store and iTunes. They say it’s to see what your friends recommend. Sure, it’s that, and it’s also the perfect way to curate the stores once and for all, allowing only the most original apps to climb up the charts.

Developers registered with Apple can already download the iOS 6 beta software and SDK for testing purposes. The finalized software is to be released this fall, Apple said.

The original iPad is not supported, and the iPhone 3GS is missing most of the new features, though it will support the upgrade.
